Piero Guadagnini – was Consul General of Italy in Hong Kong and Macau from
1960-63. He is remembered as a true gentleman, a great diplomat and a man of high culture and impeccable manners.
Below, Sergio Romano, former Ambassador turned historian and columnist, explains- in an interview he gave a few years ago – how he decided to enter the diplomatic service:
‘I was a journalist, and I had no intention of changing profession. But people have no control on their destiny. I met the Italian Consul General of Chicago, Piero Guadagnini, a man from whom I thought I should take example. He convinced me to take the diplomatic entry exam. I did, and I passed it.’
Daniel Cotton Rich, author and art historian was the head of the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a great friend of Piero Guadagnini, and they were in contact even during his posting in Hong Kong.
